The age-old question is still asked on a daily basis: what does it take to be a motivational speaker? To me, this is a difficult question to answer for the simple reason that each and every motivational speaker is different. Answering the question of what it takes to be a motivational speaker, therefore, could have a multitude of answers. The common factors among motivational speakers, however, are apparent. Most motivational speakers will take a slightly different approach when it comes to speaking – for example, some speakers may be more charismatic than others – but there are underlying things that could signify what it means to be a motivational speaker. Let me hence explore these underlying characteristics of motivational speakers in order to answer the question: what does it take to be a motivational speaker?
The first underlying characteristic of a motivational speaker is that they are always self-aware. Now, this is a term that gets used quite a lot, but in an undefined manner. By self-aware, I mean that they are aware of their strengths and weaknesses. They are able, therefore, to use their strengths to get an audience on board. They can also work on their weaknesses so that they can develop them in order to earn themselves future clout. Self-awareness also entails that they are aware of what it is that they are doing; they know their audience, they know their message and they know their goal. It is essential to be self-aware as a motivational speaker because it allows you to always stay one step ahead of your audience, therefore meaning that they are actively absorbing your information.
To be a motivational speaker, one must also be extremely knowledgeable. Not only must one be knowledgeable about one’s area of expertise, but one must also be knowledgeable about the audience to which one is presenting. This will allow one to tailor a presentation which is suitable for a certain demographic, thereby allowing an audience to relate to the message of the speaker. Knowledge of a specific topic is vital for the success of a motivational speaker, therefore to be a good motivational speaker one must conduct lots of research in order to discover what it is that society needs. Only then will one be able to find a way of helping society grow. I know it is a cliche, but knowledge is power; this is particularly important to understand when trying to be a motivational speaker.
In conclusion, I hope you are aware of what it takes to be a motivational speaker. It is a tricky art to learn, but it is always rewarding and allows you to experience a wide range of things, therefore making it an exciting prospect.
